Session Outline
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greeting and Check-in:
- Welcome the patient warmly and create a safe, inviting environment.
- Briefly explore the patient's current stress level and relationship concerns.
- Acknowledge the patient’s feelings using validation, which is a core DBT skill.
2. Identifying Core Issues (10 minutes)
- Explore Relationship Dynamics:
- Ask open-ended questions to understand the patient's perspective on their relationship issues.
- Prompt discussion about specific incidents contributing to their stress and feelings of indifference.
- Example questions:
- "Can you share a recent situation that heightened your stress in your relationship?"
- "How do you feel in moments of conflict?"
3. DBT Skills Introduction (10 minutes)
- Mindfulness:
- Introduce the skill of mindfulness to help the patient become more aware of their thoughts and feelings without judgment.
- Practice a brief mindfulness exercise, such as focusing on breath or body sensations for a minute or two.
- Distress Tolerance:
- Discuss the concept of distress tolerance and its importance in managing relationship stress.
- Share quick tips, such as grounding techniques, that can help when feelings become overwhelming.

6. Closure and Homework Assignment (5 minutes)

- Recap the session's main points: exploring relationship dynamics, practicing mindfulness and communication skills, and creating a coping strategy.
- Homework Assignment:
- Assign the patient to keep a daily stress diary for the week. In their diary, they should note:
- Instances of relationship stress,
- Their corresponding emotional response,
- Any mindfulness or coping techniques they applied during those moments.
- Closing:
- Thank the patient for their participation and remind them of the importance of practicing skills in their daily life.
