Psychotherapeutic Session Plan: Managing Stress
Session Overview
Duration: 30 minutes
Patient Mood: Stressed
Main Condition: Not specific
Engagement Level: Neutral or indifferent
Therapeutic Approach: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Session Structure
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Greeting: Start the session with a warm and welcoming tone. Acknowledge the patient's stress and let them know that this space is safe for their concerns.
- Check-In: Briefly ask the patient how they've been feeling since the last session (if applicable) or what’s been on their mind lately if this is their first session.
2. Assessment of Stress (10 minutes)
3. CBT Techniques: Reframing Thoughts (10 minutes)
- Cognitive Restructuring:
- Identifying Negative Thoughts: Ask the patient to choose a specific stressor and pinpoint the negative thoughts associated with it.
- Challenging Negative Thoughts: Guide them to assess the evidence for and against these thoughts. Ask:
- "What is the evidence for this thought? Against it?"
- "How would I respond to a friend with the same situation?"
- Reframing: Assist the patient in reframing negative thoughts to more balanced or positive ones.
4. Coping Strategies (5 minutes)
- Introducing Simple Coping Techniques:
- Breathing Exercises: Teach a simple deep breathing technique to help manage immediate stress.
- Grounding Techniques: Introduce a brief grounding exercise, such as the “5-4-3-2-1” technique, where the patient identifies:
- 5 things they can see,
- 4 things they can touch,
- 3 things they can hear,
- 2 things they can smell,
- 1 thing they can taste.
5. Conclusion and Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
- Recap: Summarize the key points covered in the session, including identified stressors and reframed thoughts.
- Homework Assignment:
- Encourage the patient to practice the deep breathing or grounding technique at least once a day and to journal any negative thoughts they experience along with their reframed perspective.
- Suggest they notice any patterns in their stress and thoughts.
6. Closing (2 minutes)
- Express Encouragement: Reinforce that it's normal to experience stress and commend their willingness to explore it.
- Schedule Next Session: Discuss availability for the next session and encourage them to reach out if they need support before then.
Notes for Therapist
- Be attentive to the patient’s responses and adjust the session flow according to their engagement level.
- Encourage openness but respect any silence or reluctance to share.
- Monitor and assess their progress with the techniques introduced in the next session.
This session plan aims to provide the patient with immediate tools to manage their stress while integrating foundational CBT principles that can be built upon in future sessions.
