Session Overview

Session Structure
1. Introduction and Rapport Building (10 minutes)

- Invite the patient to share how they have been feeling since the last session, focusing on their anxiety levels and any experiences related to their eating habits.

- Once the patient identifies negative thoughts, guide them through the process of challenging these cognitive distortions. Use techniques such as:
- Evidence Evaluation:
- Ask the patient to provide evidence for and against their negative thoughts.
- Alternative Thinking:
- Encourage them to come up with alternative, more balanced thoughts regarding food and body image.
- Document the patient’s original thoughts and their corresponding balanced thoughts for future reference.
4. Developing Healthy Coping Strategies (15 minutes)
- Collaboratively brainstorm alternative coping mechanisms for managing anxiety and eating-related triggers. These could include:
- Mindfulness Techniques: Teach the patient breathing exercises or grounding techniques to use when anxiety arises.
- Journaling: Encourage the patient to keep a food and feelings journal, noting the emotions experienced before, during, and after eating.
- Social Support: Discuss the importance of reaching out to supportive friends or family when feeling overwhelmed.
- Role-play scenarios where the patient practices using these coping mechanisms.
5. Session Summary and Homework Assignment (5 minutes)
- Summarize the key insights and strategies discussed during the session.
- Assign the patient to:
- Keep a daily log of anxious thoughts regarding food and any coping mechanisms they used.
- Practice two mindfulness exercises throughout the week.
- Encourage the patient to reflect on their feelings during these practices and discuss them in the next session.
