Psychotherapeutic Session Plan (30 Minutes)
Objective
To facilitate a supportive therapeutic environment where the patient can express feelings of being overwhelmed, and to introduce Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques aimed at improving engagement and addressing trust-related beliefs.
Session Structure
1. Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Greeting: A warm, open, and inviting greeting will help put the patient at ease.
- Check-In:
- Ask the patient how they have been feeling since the last session.
- Acknowledge the feeling of being overwhelmed.
2. Understanding the Feelings (10 Minutes)
- Exploration of Overwhelm:
- Ask the patient to describe what specifically feels overwhelming (e.g., thoughts, responsibilities).
- Validating their feelings without judgment.
- Identifying Triggers:
- Encourage the patient to think about any specific situations or events that contribute to feeling overwhelmed.
- Use open-ended questions like, "Can you tell me more about that?"
3. Cognitive Restructuring (10 Minutes)
- Identifying Negative Thoughts:
- Introduce the concept of cognitive distortions (e.g., all-or-nothing thinking, catastrophizing).
- Work with the patient to identify any negative thoughts they have when feeling overwhelmed.
- Challenging Beliefs:
- Discuss the belief "I cannot trust anyone."
- Use Socratic questioning to challenge this belief:
- "What evidence do you have that supports this belief?"
- "Are there instances in your life where trust has been beneficial?"
- Reframing Thoughts:
- Together create a more balanced thought regarding trust that acknowledges personal experiences while remaining open to trusting others.
4. Coping Strategies (5 Minutes)
- Teaching Quick Strategies:
- Introduce simple coping techniques, such as:
- Grounding Techniques: Encourage the patient to focus on their immediate surroundings. Ask them to name five things they can see, four things they can touch, three things they can hear, two things they can smell, and one thing they can taste.
- Breathing Exercises: Guide the patient through a simple deep-breathing exercise to reduce immediate feelings of overwhelm.
- Encouragement of Self-Compassion: Remind the patient to treat themselves with kindness during overwhelming times.
5. Wrap-Up and Homework (5 Minutes)
- Summarizing the Session:
- Recap key points discussed: acknowledgment of feelings, cognitive restructuring around trust, and coping strategies.
- Assigning Simple Homework:
- Encourage the patient to keep a brief daily log of situations where they feel overwhelmed and note any thoughts they have about trust.
- Suggest they write down one positive experience each week where they allowed themselves to trust someone in a small way.
- Closing:
- Schedule the next session and express genuine interest in their progress.
Notes for Therapist
- Maintain an empathetic tone throughout the session.
