Introduction

In this guided imagery exercise, we will focus on fostering self-compassion through “re-parenting” techniques for Gordon. Setting the Scene

Gordon, find a quiet and comfortable place where you will not be disturbed. Sit or lie down in a position that feels relaxed yet alert. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths—inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a moment, and then exhale gently through your mouth. As you breathe, allow the tension in your body to melt away.

Invoking Relaxation

Let’s spend a few moments focusing on relaxation. Breathe in deeply… and out slowly. Visualize any stress or tension leaving your body with each exhale. Imagine a warm, golden light surrounding you, enhancing your sense of safety and peace. With the next few breaths, invite this warm light to fill your whole being, grounding you in the present.

Visualizing the Inner Child

As you continue to breathe slowly, I invite you to imagine a beautiful place where you feel safe, serene, and happy. This could be a real location or a made-up one—whatever comes to mind. In this place, you notice a small child sitting or playing alone; this child represents your inner self, who might be feeling vulnerable, sad, or grieving.

Engaging with the Inner Child

Gently approach this child and kneel down to meet their gaze. Take a moment to observe how this child feels. What emotions do you notice in their eyes? Allow yourself to connect deeply with their feelings. You may want to ask the child: “What do you need right now?”—and be open to whatever response you receive.

Taking on the Nurturing Parent Role

Now, as you connect with your inner child, envision yourself transforming into a nurturing parent figure. What would this compassionate version of yourself look like? How do they behave? Allow your nurturing self to radiate warmth, love, and kindness as you approach the inner child.

Providing Comfort

In this loving state, speak to your inner child with gentle and reassuring words. You might say, “I’m here for you. It’s okay to feel sad. You are not alone—I will always take care of you.” Give the child space to express feelings, and reaffirm that those feelings are valid.

Embracing Emotions

As the nurturing parent, encourage your inner child to embrace their emotions fully. Invite them to share their grief and sorrow without judgment. Remind them that crying is a natural response to pain, and it's okay to feel whatever they are feeling.

Visualizing Support

Imagine yourself holding this child in your arms, offering comfort and protection. Visualize the child’s tension releasing gradually as they feel safe. Together, you can create a compassionate dialogue about what the grieving child needs to heal. Emphasize that it’s a journey, and healing takes time.

Guided Return to the Present

As this session comes to an end, gently let the inner child know that you will always be there for them. Remind them they can reach out whenever they need comfort and support. Slowly bring your awareness back to your breath, and begin to wiggle your fingers and toes. When you feel ready, open your eyes.

Reflection

Gordon, take a moment to reflect on this experience. You may want to jot down your thoughts or feelings in a journal. Consider how you can continue to nurture this inner child in your daily life. Remember that self-compassion is a practice that can be cultivated over time. Acknowledge both the pain and the love you have within.

By following this guided imagery exercise, Gordon can cultivate a nurturing relationship with his inner child and practice self-compassion as he navigates through grief.
