Overview
This session will focus on helping the patient manage feelings of being overwhelmed, particularly in the context of chronic pain. By applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques, we will help the patient explore coping strategies, particularly distraction techniques.

Session Structure
1. Opening (5 minutes)
- Welcome and Check-In:
- Greet the patient warmly.
- Briefly ask how they've been since the last session, focusing on their emotional state and any significant experiences related to their chronic pain.
2. Introduction to the Topic (5 minutes)
- Discussion on Feeling Overwhelmed:
- Invite the patient to describe what being overwhelmed feels like, particularly in the context of their pain.
- Normalize their feelings and explain how chronic pain can contribute to feelings of being overwhelmed.
3. Psychoeducation (10 minutes)
- Understanding DBT and Distraction Techniques:
- Provide a brief overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy and its relevance in managing emotional responses.
- Educate the patient about distraction techniques, explaining how they can be used to redirect focus away from pain and overwhelming feelings.
4. Practical Exercise: Distraction Techniques (15 minutes)

- Lead a short mindful breathing exercise (5 minutes) to ground the patient and help them focus on the present moment.

- Present 3-5 distraction techniques and guide the patient through each one:
- Engage in Physical Activity: Encourage them to think of a short, low-impact activity that they enjoy.
- Creative Expression: Suggest journaling, drawing, or crafting as a means of expressing feelings creatively.
- Listening to Music or Podcasts: Discuss how music or topics of interest can serve as a distraction.
- Guided Imagery: Lead the patient through a brief guided imagery exercise, fostering a mental escape from pain.
- Mindful Observation: Practice observing an object in the room to redirect focus onto something neutral.
