1. Introduction (5 minutes)

- Agenda Setting: Briefly outline what will be covered during the session, emphasizing a focus on stress management using CBT.
2. Identifying Stressors (10 minutes)
- Open-Ended Questions: Ask the patient to describe any current thoughts or situations that may be causing their stress.
- Example questions:
- "Can you tell me about what's been on your mind lately?"
- "Have there been specific situations in the last week that have felt particularly overwhelming?"
- Active Listening: As the patient shares, practice active listening and reflect back what they are saying to validate their feelings.
3. Cognitive Restructuring (10 minutes)
- Introducing Cognitive Distortions: Explain the concept of cognitive distortions briefly. List common distortions, such as:
- All-or-nothing thinking
- Catastrophizing
- Overgeneralization
- Identifying Distortions: Ask the patient if they can identify any of these distortions in their thought patterns related to their stress.
- Facilitate discussion by asking:
- "Do you notice any patterns in your thoughts that might contribute to your stress?"
- Practice Reframing Thoughts: Work with the patient to reframe any negative thoughts identified. Encourage them to articulate a more balanced perspective.
4. Coping Strategies Only if Needed (5 minutes)
- Introduce Simple Coping Techniques: If the patient shows interest, briefly introduce coping strategies such as:
- Deep breathing exercises
- Grounding techniques
- Mindfulness practices
- Encourage Patient Input: Ask if any specific techniques resonate with them or if they wish to explore further options in future sessions.
5. Closing and Reflection (5 minutes)
- Summarize Insights: Recap the main points discussed, emphasizing any breakthroughs regarding thought patterns or stressors.
- Engagement with Goals: Invite thoughts on next steps and any personal goals they may wish to pursue in addressing their stress based on the session.
- Gratitude and Goodbye: Thank the patient for their openness and participation, reinforcing that each step is valuable in their journey.
