2. Mindfulness Exercise (5 Minutes)
- Grounding Technique: Lead a short mindfulness exercise to help the patient become more present and centered. For example, guide them through focused breathing or a brief body scan.

4. Art Activity (20 Minutes)
- Art Creation: Instruct the patient to create a piece of art that represents their experience of grief and the overwhelming feelings related to it. Encourage them to express whatever comes to mind—shapes, colors, symbols, or imagery.
- Prompt Questions:
- What colors represent your feelings of grief?
- Are there any symbols or images that come to mind when you think of your loss?
5. Sharing and Processing (10 Minutes)
- Discussion of Artwork: Invite the patient to share their artwork with you. Ask open-ended questions such as:
- What does this artwork mean to you?
- How did it feel to create this piece?
- Explore Emotions: Gently explore deeper feelings that may arise during the sharing. Address any anxiety or overwhelming feelings that surface as they discuss their artwork.
6. Boundary Setting Discussion (5 Minutes)
- Identify Areas for Boundaries: Discuss with the patient the importance of setting boundaries in their life, particularly concerning grief and anxiety.
- Questions to Guide the Discussion:
- Are there any situations or people that feel overwhelming to you right now?
- How can setting boundaries help you ease your feelings of being overwhelmed?
7. Closing (5 Minutes)
- Summarize the Session: Recap important insights shared during the session, emphasizing the value of the artwork and boundary setting.
- Homework Assignment: Encourage the patient to create a simple boundary checklist to identify areas in their life where they could practice saying "no" or withdrawing from stress-inducing situations.
- Next Steps: Discuss what to expect in the next session and encourage them to keep engaging with their artistic expression outside of therapy.
Note:
Throughout the session, maintain a supportive and empathetic stance, validating the patient’s feelings and experiences to encourage deeper engagement. The use of art therapy should be gentle and guided to ensure the patient feels comfortable exploring their grief and setting boundaries.
