Not Specific
Session Goals
- Explore the patient’s feelings of numbness.
- Address the maladaptive belief: "I am unlovable."
- Increase engagement in the therapeutic process.
Session Outline
1. Introduction (5 Minutes)
- Purpose: Set a comfortable tone for the session.
- Activity: Greet the patient and ask them how they are feeling today. Validate their feelings without pushing for elaboration.
- Goal: Build rapport and ease any resistance.
2. Exploring Numbness (8 Minutes)
- Discussion:
- Ask the patient to describe their experience of numbness.
- Use open-ended questions such as:
- “What does being numb feel like for you?”
- “Are there specific situations that heighten this numbness?”
- Objective: Help the patient connect to their feelings and identify any underlying emotions.
3. Cognitive Behavioral Approach (10 Minutes)
- Identify Cognitive Distortions:
- Guide the patient to reflect on the thought “I am unlovable.”
- Use Socratic questioning to challenge this belief:
- “What evidence do you have that supports this idea?”
- “Can you think of moments when you felt loved or connected?”
- Cognitive Restructuring:
- Introduce alternative, more balanced thoughts:
- “There are people who care about me.”
- “My worth is not determined by external validation.”
- Objective: Help the patient recognize and begin to restructure negative thoughts.
4. Behavioral Activation (5 Minutes)
- Suggestion:
- Encourage the patient to engage in a trivial yet enjoyable activity this week (e.g., taking a walk, reading, listening to music).
- Explore potential barriers to engaging in activities and encourage a small step forward.
- Objective: Initiate a first step towards reconnection with emotions and joy.
5. Session Closure (2 Minutes)
- Summary:
- Recap what was discussed, emphasizing small insights about feelings and thoughts.
- Reinforce the idea that feelings of numbness can be a temporary state.
- Next Steps:
- Encourage the patient to continue thinking about the new perspectives discussed.
- Schedule the next session and remind them that therapy is a safe space for exploration without pressure.
Notes for the Therapist
- Maintain a compassionate and non-judgmental stance to help reduce resistance.
- Use reflective listening to validate the patient's experiences.
- Reassure the patient that they are not alone in feeling numb, which may help to alleviate feelings of isolation.
Homework (Optional)
- If the patient expresses openness, suggest a light journaling exercise to record feelings for the week. Focus on:
- Instances of feeling connected or loved.
- Fluctuations in feelings of numbness.
This session plan is designed to create a safe environment for a hesitant patient while using CBT techniques to gently challenge their beliefs and promote engagement.
