- Greeting: Welcome the patient warmly to establish rapport.
- Purpose: Explain that the focus of today’s session will be on identifying stressors and developing coping strategies through CBT.
- Check-in: Ask how the patient has been feeling since the last session (if applicable) and what current stressors they might like to discus.
2. Identify Stressors (10 minutes)
- Discussion: Invite the patient to talk about what is currently causing them stress.
- Questions to Guide:
- What situations or thoughts are contributing to your stress?
- How do you think these stressors affect your daily life?
- Active Listening: Validate the patient's feelings and concerns without judgment.
3. Cognitive Restructuring (10 minutes)
- Introduce CBT Concept: Explain the cognitive triangle—thoughts, feelings, and behaviors—and how these interact.
- Identify Negative Thoughts: Help the patient identify any negative thoughts they associate with their stressors.
- Example Questions:
- When you think about your stress, what thoughts come to mind?
- Are there any patterns in those thoughts that you notice?
- Challenging Negative Thoughts:
- Encourage the patient to consider evidence for and against these thoughts.
- Help them reframe these thoughts into more balanced perspectives.
- Example Reframing:
- Original thought: "I can't handle this."
- Reframed: "I have managed difficult situations before, and I can seek help if needed."
4. Coping Strategies (5 minutes)
- Explore Techniques: Discuss coping strategies that might be helpful.
- Mindfulness Exercises: Introduce a simple breathing exercise (e.g., 4-7-8 breathing).
- Journaling: Suggest keeping a stress journal to track stressors and responses.
- Discussion of Implementation: Ask how the patient feels about trying these strategies and if they have any preferences for what they would like to use.
5. Closing and Summary (5 minutes)
- Recap Key Points: Summarize the major topics discussed, including stressors identified, negative thoughts reframed, and coping strategies suggested.
- Encouragement: Reinforce the patient’s strengths and ability to cope with stress.
- Future Sessions: Discuss any specific goals for the next session or support for ongoing stress management.
Additional Notes:
- Homework Assignment (Optional): Encourage the patient to practice a new coping strategy or keep a stress journal until the next session.
- Encouragement for Continued Engagement: Remind the patient that it’s important to continue utilizing techniques learned in therapy and to bring back any new insights or challenges they may experience.
This structured session plan aims to utilize the patient's positive engagement while effectively implementing CBT techniques to manage their stress.
