Client Details:
Session Overview:
During the ninth session of ten, the client arrived five minutes late and exhibited signs of distraction, marked by frequent checks of his phone. Given the session is approaching conclusion, we took this opportunity to review previously discussed coping strategies. The client expressed dissatisfaction with these strategies, asserting that they have not been effective and disclosed a tendency to not engage with them.
To assess his progress, I utilized a scale of 0 to 10 for the client to rate any improvements in regard to his self-perception since initiating counselling; he rated himself at a 6. Encouragingly, he noted that attending the gym and spending time with his girlfriend have positively impacted his mood. The client also revealed plans to spend the Christmas holidays at his girlfriend's mother’s home, a three-hour journey away, expressing optimism that the distance from home and school may alleviate some of his anxiety.
Interventions and Insights:
During the session, the client shared that he recently had a meeting with Mr. C at school concerning a reduced timetable, which he feels will be beneficial in managing his anxiety levels. Furthermore, he mentioned that listening to uplifting music assists him in calming down. However, he also acknowledged difficulties with sleep due to excessive rumination regarding the potential return of his stepfather and the associated fears for his family's safety.
I initiated a discussion about his phone usage prior to bedtime; the client was noticeably resistant to contemplating any adjustments to this habit. Throughout our conversation, his lingering engagement with his phone indicated a struggle to maintain focus.
To redirect the conversation and encourage engagement, I inquired about his school day, particularly his classes. The client shared that art is his favourite subject and mentioned that he would have been attending that class during our session. I further explored how much longer his art lesson would continue, to which he informed me it was set to last another 20 minutes. Recognizing the potential benefit of allowing him to participate in his preferred activity, I offered him the option to leave early.
The client expressed his desire to leave the session to attend his art class, to which I granted him permission. He departed the session approximately 20 minutes early.
Concluding Remarks:
This session highlighted the importance of the client's connections outside of therapy, such as his relationship and fitness activities, in fostering a sense of well-being. However, challenges remain in his ability to effectively manage anxiety and sleep, alongside substantial resistances to modifying habits that contribute to negative experiences. The forthcoming final session will allow us to build upon these insights and further develop practical coping strategies while reinforcing his strengths.
