Today’s session was centered on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. The primary goal was to foster a sense of safety by creating a personalized mental space that provides comfort and security to the client.
We initiated the session by guiding the client, Frances, to visualize a safe environment. This safe place was conceptualized as her home, adorned with a beautifully lit Christmas tree, a warm fire crackling in the background, and a beloved cat lounging nearby. Through this exercise, we aimed to engage multiple senses, evoking warmth and comfort associated with this imagery. Frances practiced invoking this picture whenever she felt the word "warm" was pronounced. The words were intended to serve as a trigger for the positive emotions associated with her safe space.
The session included a comprehensive overview of EMDR techniques. We employed a specific example that posed minimal distress to Frances, ensuring her comfort throughout the process. Utilization of the train analogy proved particularly effective; this metaphor facilitated her understanding of the process in a more relatable manner.
As part of our ongoing work, we identified a pivotal task for our next session. Frances reflected on a distressing memory involving a traumatic experience where she felt physically trapped, specifically, having an ex-partner’s hands around her neck. The emotions tied to this memory were profound, with an intensity of 100% related to fear. She expressed a belief that she would not survive the encounter, feeling an overwhelming sense of guilt by telling herself, "It’s my fault."
Conversely, during our work, we highlighted a more positive reframe: “There was nothing I could have done; I survived the experience.” This shift is critical in EMDR therapy, as it allows clients to reprocess their traumatic memories and begin to challenge limiting beliefs.
Our next session is scheduled for December 31st at 10:00 AM. During this session, we will continue to explore the identified trauma in further detail and work on reframing the negative beliefs that emerged. It is essential to approach this next phase with sensitivity and to ensure that Frances feels fully supported as we delve deeper into her emotional landscape.
Today’s session proved to be a constructive step in Frances's therapeutic journey. By creating a safe mental imagery and reviewing EMDR techniques, we set a strong foundation for addressing traumatic memories while fostering resilience. Moving into our next session, we will focus on additional techniques to support Frances in processing her past experiences effectively and safely.
