Psychotherapy Session Plan (30 Minutes)
Patient Mood: Anxious
Condition: Not specific
Engagement Level: Confused or unsure
Session Objective
To help the patient understand their anxiety through cognitive restructuring and encourage a more compassionate mindset towards their feelings.
Session Structure
1. Introduction and Rapport Building (5 minutes)
- Greeting and Setting Comfort
Begin by welcoming the patient warmly. Ensure that the space feels safe and inviting.
- Check-in
Ask the patient how they've been feeling since the last session, if applicable. Use open-ended questions to encourage sharing.
2. Psychoeducation on Anxiety (5 minutes)
- Understanding Anxiety
Briefly explain what anxiety is, normalizing the experience. Emphasize that it’s common to feel anxious, especially when uncertain.
- Cognitive Behavioral Model
Introduce the concept of the cognitive triangle: Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors. Explain how they influence each other.
3. Cognitive Restructuring Activity (10 minutes)
- Identifying Thoughts
Invite the patient to share a recent moment of anxiety. Encourage them to describe the specific thoughts that contributed to their feelings.
- Challenging Negative Beliefs
Use Socratic questioning to probe these thoughts. For example:
- "What evidence do you have that supports this thought?"
- "How does this thought affect your feelings and behavior?"
- Reframing Thoughts
Help the patient reframe negative thoughts. Encourage the idea that feelings of anxiety are not permanent and can change.
For example:
- From "I am always going to feel this way" to "Anxiety is a feeling that I can learn to manage."
4. Mindfulness Breathing Exercise (5 minutes)
- Introduce Mindfulness
Explain the benefits of mindfulness as a tool for managing anxiety.
- Practice Breathing
Guide the patient through a brief mindfulness breathing exercise:
- Inhale deeply through the nose for a count of four.
- Hold for a count of four.
- Exhale slowly through the mouth for a count of six.
- Repeat this cycle for a couple of minutes.
5. Goal Setting and Coping Strategies (3 minutes)
- Setting Realistic Goals
Encourage the patient to set small, achievable goals related to managing their anxiety.
Example: "This week, I will take five minutes each day to practice mindfulness."
- Coping Strategies Discussion
Briefly discuss other potential coping strategies they can try and encourage them to explore what works best for them.
6. Closure and Reflection (2 minutes)
- Recap the Session
Summarize key points discussed and empathize with their feelings and progress.
- Encourage Future Sessions
Reinforce the idea that understanding and managing anxiety is a process that takes time. Encourage the patient to continue attending sessions for guidance and support.
Notes for Future Sessions
- Follow up on the goals set in this session.
- Continue revisiting cognitive restructuring techniques.
- Stay adaptive to the patient's needs, especially as they express confusion or uncertainty.
By utilizing this structured approach, the session can foster a supportive environment for the patient, helping them to process their anxiety and lay the groundwork for further progress in therapy.
