Psychotherapeutic Session Plan: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Stress and Depression
Session Length: 30 Minutes
Objective:
To utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help the patient reduce stress and manage symptoms of depression through increased acceptance, awareness, and engagement in values-driven behavior. The aim is to encourage the development of a consistent routine.
Session Outline
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
- Welcome the patient and create a comfortable environment.
- Briefly recap the previous session (if applicable) and the goals for today.
- Set the intention for the session: to explore stress, acceptance, and developing a routine.
2. Mindfulness Exercise (10 minutes)
- Guided Mindfulness Exercise:
- Begin with a 5-minute mindfulness exercise focusing on the breath. Encourage the patient to notice the sensations of inhalation and exhalation.
- Afterward, facilitate a discussion about the experience. Ask questions like:
- "What did you notice during the exercise?"
- "How did it feel to focus on your breath?"
- Reflection on Stress:
- Encourage the patient to acknowledge their current feelings of stress without judgment.
- Ask the patient to describe what stress feels like for them and to identify any physical sensations associated with stress.
3. Exploration of Acceptance (5 minutes)
- Discuss the concept of acceptance in the context of ACT.
- Key Points to Cover:
- Acceptance is allowing thoughts and feelings to be without trying to change them.
- Differentiate between "experiential avoidance" and acceptance.
- Encourage the patient to reflect on any thoughts or feelings they might be avoiding and how this has affected their stress and mood.
4. Values Clarification (5 minutes)
- Guide the patient through a brief values clarification exercise.
- Ask questions such as:
- "What do you care about most in your life?"
- "What brings you joy or a sense of purpose?"
- Help them identify 1-3 key values that resonate with them and might guide their daily actions.
5. Developing a Consistent Routine (5 minutes)
- Discuss how having a consistent routine can provide stability and reduce feelings of stress.
- Collaborate with the patient to create a simple, daily routine that aligns with their identified values.
- Example Elements:
- Morning mindfulness practice (5-10 minutes)
- Physical activity (evening walk or yoga for 15-20 minutes)
- Time set aside for a valued hobby (30 minutes daily)
- Encourage small, manageable steps to implement their routine.
6. Closing (5 minutes)
- Summarize the main points discussed in the session.
- Emphasize the importance of acceptance, awareness, and engaging in value-driven activities.
- Encourage the patient to reflect on how they can integrate acceptance practices into their daily routine and to use mindfulness as a tool for stress management.
- Schedule the next session and discuss what they would like to focus on.
Additional Notes
- Throughout the session, it’s crucial to cultivate a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere.
- Remind the patient that it's normal to feel indifferent or neutral and that engaging with their feelings takes time and practice.
- Encourage them to keep a journal capturing their thoughts and feelings as they experiment with their new routine and acceptance practices.
By utilizing ACT principles within the session, the aim is to provide the patient with tools to manage their stress and depression effectively while encouraging a commitment to their values and routines.
